The Doglock was introduced in England in the early 1600's. The dog was an added safety feature to the English Locks which either had a poorly made or non-existant half cock notches on the tumbler.
The later form of the Doglock appeared in the late 1600's. Many had a tumbler similar to the true Flintlock while others like the picture above were missing the half cock notch. The Doglock stopped being used by the military in England by 1715, but other countries like Sweden and Norway kept the dog into the Percussion era.
